Welcome to The School of Applied Engineering and Technology (SAET), NJIT’s home for applied undergraduate and graduate programs. Students in these programs receive both classroom and experiential opportunities that focus on realization as opposed to theoretical work. SAET has several unique offerings crossing over the different areas of science, engineering, and technology.
The B.S. in General Engineering provides opportunities for multi/interdisciplinary education and allows students to pursue unique concentrations centered on industry positions. This includes a concentration in Engineering Innovation and Intellectual Property that provides the foundation for those interested in working in the intellectual property space.
Multi- and Inter-disciplinary education can also be pursued in our Engineering Science graduate program, consisting of our M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Science degree options. The graduate program is intended for students who are interested in blending the engineering design process for problem solving and the scientific method to describe and understand the natural world. Students can pursue customized plans of study or specializations, including an established plan of study in Engineering Education. Graduates have a number of opportunities in academia, industry, and government roles.
The Engineering Technology programs are focused on the needs of industry. Students study problem solving through the engineering design process, and the application of modern technology (tools, devices, software and systems). Technology constantly changes in industry. The Engineering Technology programs respond by continuously updating their curriculum to address this dynamic environment. The plans of study are project based, typically have an integrated applied laboratory, and are designed to prepare students for employment in a wide range of technical fields. There are several programs to consider within four divisions. The Biomedical Engineering Technology (BMET) program is within our Biology and Life Science division. The Built Environment Division has several programs including Construction Engineering Technology (CET), Construction Management Technology (CMT), Concrete Industry Management (CIM), and Surveying Engineering Technology (SET). The B.S. in Concrete Industry Management is a unique engineering technology-based program. This is a concrete industry supported program that provides a foundation in concrete material, processing, construction technology, and management. Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET), Industrial Engineering Technology (IET), Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), and Software and Data Engineering Technology (SDET) are within the Electrical and Mechanical Division. The Engineering Education Division contains our Technology Education (TEED) program.
The Engineering Technology courses are taught by a faculty with both industrial experience and advanced academic degrees. Program graduates can pursue licensure, professional certification, or graduate degrees in engineering, engineering management, and other areas. The B.S. in Construction Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs provide an opportunity to pursue Professional Engineering licensure. In addition, those graduating from the B.S in Surveying Engineering Technology can pursue their Professional Land Surveyor license.

The School of Applied Engineering & Technology’s (SAET’s) General Engineering undergraduate program provides students with an opportunity for multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary study. The program provides breadth in a range of engineering, science and mathematics courses while providing flexibility to develop depth in specialized areas. A degree in General Engineering is structured to address the rapidly changing needs of the engineering and science fields. This program is informed by the needs of industry, education, and government organizations.
Graduates of the General Engineering B.S. program will:
- Advance in diverse positions and career paths requiring collaboration, communication, problem solving, design, analysis, and development.
- Use their multi-disciplinary knowledge to develop customized industry and business solutions informed by diverse global and societal needs.
- Will continue to take advantage of opportunities for life-long learning and professional development to further their careers.
Students work closely with their academic adviser to select an existing concentration or develop a custom plan of study to meet their interests and the program graduation requirements.
SAET Structure:
The SAET programs consist of a Program Coordinator and an Academic Advisor.
Academic Advisors: should be contacted for program related course scheduling, graduation checks, academic concerns, general program questions, and general advice on other NJIT departments/points of contact. Academic advisors can also provide input on careers and other credentials (e.g. minors) to be considered as you develop your plan of study at NJIT.
Program Coordinators: should be contacted for information on the program and how it relates to a student’s career objectives. Program coordinators can provide career advisement, the industry, input on NJIT majors/minors, graduate degrees, certificates, and licensure. Program coordinators are also available to discuss administrative questions/concerns, provide advisement on NJIT systems/processes, and to discuss academic concerns.
SAET Registration Systems
The SAET Programs utilize two methods for course registration. Students seeking a permit for an SAET course should use the SAET Support System
Every semester an advisor hold is placed on the account of every NJIT student. This is normal. For SAET students, to have the advising hold removed, you can fill out a Course Approval Form for the upcoming semester that will be reviewed by the Academic Advisor.

The greatest current need of U.S. education is for highly qualified teachers of science and technology at the secondary school level. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the shortage will intensify over the next decade as teachers of the “baby boom” generation retire. Technology-savvy teachers who are able to incorporate newly-developing educational methodologies and technologies into the curriculum are also in high demand. Students may enter this program as a freshman, or transfer into this program from an Engineering Technology or Pre-Engineering program at a two year college. The program consists of 128 credits, with 30 credits of education at Rutgers University, Newark, including one semester of student teaching. This program will cover material in a variety of Engineering Technology disciplines.
Candidates for a teacher-education certificate must have a 2.8 cumulative grade point average to successfully complete their teacher education program. They also must pass the appropriate PRAXIS examination before the New Jersey State Department of Education will issue the appropriate certificate.

About the Program
The Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) Program at the New Jersey Institute of Technology equips graduates with the knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and hands-on skills necessary for careers in the design, installation, manufacturing, testing, evaluation, technical sales, or maintenance of mechanical systems. Graduates from our program typically excel in areas such as applied design, analysis, development, implementation, or the management of advanced mechanical systems and processes.
The MET Program emphasizes hands-on experience and the use of state-of-art computer software in the fields of mechanical design, automatic controls, power generation, CAD/CAM, HVAC, and engineering sales. It also provides a strong foundation in mathematics and science, enabling students to pursue a professional engineering license or graduate studies.
This comprehensive four-year curriculum offers opportunities for both traditional students and transfer students with A.A.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering Technology to complete their baccalaureate degree. In all cases, students—whether completing the full four-year program or transferring—must complete a minimum of 120 credits to graduate.
For students interested in pursuing careers in the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) field, particularly in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), we recommend considering the following technical electives:

Additionally, students aiming for a career in advanced manufacturing and automation should explore the option of minoring in Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MNET).

About the Program
The Software and Data Engineering Technology (SDET) degree at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is an applied, industry-focused baccalaureate program that prepares students to design, build, and manage software-driven systems in technical and operational environments. With an emphasis on industry problem solving, hands-on learning, and emerging technologies, the program equips graduates with the applied skills needed to support the digital transformation of New Jersey’s industrial, health care, infrastructure, and energy sectors.
The SDET program is focused on meeting the industrial software and data demands of engineering, operational, and regulated domains. Graduates are especially trained to integrate software with physical systems in domains where reliability, safety, and technical interoperability are paramount.
The curriculum blends core competencies in programming, databases, cloud computing, and systems integration with applied knowledge in automation, control systems, operational technology (OT), and data workflows. Students are exposed to cyber-physical systems, embedded software, IoT architectures, and edge computing through project-based learning and industry partnerships.
Software and Data Engineering Technology Program Career Pathways
Graduates of the SDET program are uniquely positioned for high-demand roles that combine software, data, and systems thinking in operational environments. These careers are key to the modernization of fields such as smart manufacturing, healthcare technology, energy systems, surveying and geospatial analytics, and smart buildings. These career pathways include:
- Systems Integrator: Designs and implements automation solutions that connect hardware, software, and control systems in industrial environments. Works with PLCs, SCADA systems, and industrial networks to enable machine-to-enterprise integration.
- Automation Controls Engineer: Programs PLCs, configures HMIs, and optimizes control loops to automate production and process operations. Essential for modernizing manufacturing and enabling smart factory capabilities.
