Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET)
The program provides the engineering and technology foundation to enter a number of applied areas including automation, HVAC, automotive, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
About the Program
The Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) Program at the New Jersey Institute of Technology equips graduates with the knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and hands-on skills necessary for careers in the design, installation, manufacturing, testing, evaluation, technical sales, or maintenance of mechanical systems. Graduates from our program typically excel in areas such as applied design, analysis, development, implementation, or the management of advanced mechanical systems and processes.
The MET Program emphasizes hands-on experience and the use of state-of-art computer software in the fields of mechanical design, automatic controls, power generation, CAD/CAM, HVAC, and engineering sales. It also provides a strong foundation in mathematics and science, enabling students to pursue a professional engineering license or graduate studies.
This comprehensive four-year curriculum offers opportunities for both traditional students and transfer students with A.A.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering Technology to complete their baccalaureate degree. In all cases, students—whether completing the full four-year program or transferring—must complete a minimum of 120 credits to graduate.
For students interested in pursuing careers in the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) field, particularly in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), we recommend considering the following technical electives:
- CET 314: Construction Procedures II
- CMT 452: Mechanical and Electrical Systems for Construction
- CET 322: Construction Codes and Regulations
Additionally, students aiming for a career in advanced manufacturing and automation should explore the option of minoring in Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MNET).
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology Program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET http://www.abet.org., under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Mechanical Engineering Technology and Similarly Named Programs.
Accreditation.org (https://accreditation.org/), an effort of New Jersey Institute of Technology, offers information about why program accreditation is an important consideration when choosing a degree program. The portal underscores NJIT’s commitment to accreditation and supports building awareness of the value of worldwide accreditation of academic programs in engineering, engineering technology, and computing.
